Day 9: Monday, July 24, 2017
Ile de Ré to Sainte Terre
224 km, 1630 m of climbing

day 9

Another day with some hills but rather easy to ride . First, we need to get back across the bridge (use the bike trail on the left side going back – the path on the right is for pedestrians only). Those who look for breakfast could stop in La Rochelle, the next and large town on the day’s route.

elev day 9

Across a lot of farmland and numerous villages the route leads southeast. About 110 km into the ride we will reach the town of Cognac, which I recommend for a rest stop as the next larger town is 100 km further down the road. River valleys will take us downhill for a bit to then climb out again; we will do this a couple of times on this day but all is rather modest. The final 80 km or so will lead us through some of the famous Bordeaux wine areas and towns before the day ends on the banks of the river Dordogne nearby the small town of Sainte Terre. It may not offer much variety for dinner, so I recommend to resupply at Libourne (or to have a meal there), about 205 km into the ride.
